The elements of poetry and song are fused together to create the dynamic duo, Xpressions. The soul-filled vocals of Baseemah El-Amin Hasan and Passion-driven poetic expressions of Hannah Hasan combine to create an unforgettable recipe of wonderful, harmonious music. Like in all great recipes, Xpressions consists of more than meets the eyes. An immeasurable amount of Islam, supportive family, and the secret ingredient, third member Khadijah Hasan all combine to give this recipe its unique flavor. Two years ago, while visiting Khadijah at her university, Xpressions was created. The discovery of the singing talents of Baseemah sparked the idea. Hannah,s poetic ability and gift of gab just seemed to add to the singing. The undeniable chemistry present between lifelong friends Hannah and Baseemah made the group idea, presented by Khadijah, inevitable. It began that day as a joke. Hannah and Baseemah wrote a song, Khadijah found a beat and the rest is history. The name Xpressions came very easy because it was the perfect summation of what the group was trying to accomplish and convey to those that would possibly hear this newfound hobby. The word xpressions simply describes what the ladies are doing in their music, xpressing themselves, who they are, and what they represent.
At an annual banquet, Xpressions was given a chance to perform at their hometown Masjid in Statesville, NC Masjid Al Mu Minun. After this performance others began to recognze the group and their popularity grew in the area. Xpressions came to realize that their music was more than expected. Xpressions transformed from a hobby to kill time and fill the boredom when not in school. It became a job and a duty. Past engagements have included but are not limited to, conventions, community festivals, parades, birthday parties, banquets, and religious celebrations. We have also been blessed to travel throughout our beloved North Carolina and various other cities in the United States.
A soulful mix that appeals to all audiences of all ages and diverse backgrounds, Xpressions makes conscious music to alter the perception of Muslims, women, & African Americans from one of negativity to one of positivity and acceptance. The absolute love and acknowledgement of Al-Islam has kept Xpressions moving in a positive direction. We recognized, embraced, and come to the conclusion that Al-Islam is our culture. It is who we are before anything else or any other societal label placed upon us. The African American has been in a search for a home and a culture. Xpressions believes that our home and our culture is Islam if we take the time to accept and embrace it. Like all other cultures in the world, we need to have things that are uniquely ours and provide the rest of the world with a strong, uncanny representation of who we are as Muslims. Our music should reflect our way of life. Our music should not conform to the standards out today that are not representative of Al-Islam and what we stand for as Muslims. Muslims should have music that sounds good, possess strong lyrics, and can compete in the larger market but still maintain its tie to Al-Islam, our culture.
